AD - Ace Grand Hotel Bellevue's Eccentric London Look

In its article "Ace Grand Hotel Bellevue's Eccentric London Look", AD presents the Grand Hotel Bellevue London.

At the British capital’s brightest new boutique hotel, interior designer Fabrizio Casiraghi has given traditional style a zingy modern feel that you can steal

London is hardly lacking in elegant stucco-fronted Victorian townhouses, but there’s something special about one that overlooks Norfolk Square in Paddington. It’s home to the new Grand Hotel Bellevue – the first British property by French group Lignée Hotels – and aims to present visitors with an aesthetic surprise or two. Its concept, masterminded by Paris-based Italian architect Fabrizio Casiraghi, was inspired by the contrast between the townhouse’s classical façade and its dynamic locale, which, like most of London, is in constant flux.

Casiraghi imagined the hotel as a family home, presided over by “an eclectic couple… an aristocratic Englishman and his eccentric, globetrotting wife”. The husband’s influence is reflected in an abundant use of lacquered wood and antique finds, while the wife’s character shines through in the bold colour palette: in the lobby, for example, rich boiserie reminiscent of an English country house is juxtaposed with orange walls that inject modern energy.

This theme of contrasts continues in the hotel’s 60 guest rooms, where bespoke dark-wood furniture meets warm colours, arranged in graduating levels of intensity. Butter yellow and taupe shades on walls are complemented with deep orange, blue and olive-green fabrics and bathroom tiles, while Gothic-style cornices add a romantic flourish.

Casiraghi took inspiration from boat cabins when designing the smaller rooms, lending them a cosy, functional feel. In the larger chambers, he allowed original features to sing; expect high ceilings, sash windows and bespoke furniture. The Grand Norfolk suite boasts views over the square.

The ochre-toned Pondicherry Bar is open to city dwellers, and thus sets a vibrant scene. Its wraparound wall tapestries are by American fashion designer Emily Bode; embroidered with elephants and tigers, they’re a stylish nod to Britain’s links with Indian culture.
